I got into uni 5 years ago but I didn’t get into engineering. I had to settle for this ridiculous mathematics degree. My commulative gpa wasn’t high enough, even though I had individual outstanding grades from difficult subjects. I have two patents to my name, and the bastards still don’t let me in. I honestly have never heard these type of remarks about ChemE's. I guess it just shows that any field can get a bad rap some way or another. From my experience, one type of engineer tends to always look down upon another type of engineer. For example, I'm a mechanical engineer and have heard many 'put downs' on electrical engineering, civil engineering, industrial engineering and any type of engineering-tech degrees. I never really understood what it was about because its the individuals choose what they want to learn, so they obviously have a passion for it and, more importantly, enjoy it. In my opinion, the engineers that spend their time ripping on other fields of engineers are simply being arrogant and ignorant.
Chemical Engineering is by no means an easy, plumber-like field. It is considered one of the harder fields of engineering because it not only entails physics and mathematics, but also chemistry (biomedical engineering and petroleum engineering are the only other ones I can think of that have 3 fields of the 4 major sciences). Not many fields of engineering can say they incorporate 3 major fields of sciences. Chemistry is not an easy field of science like that moronic electrical engineering friend said. Yes, his field of engineering is hard in its own right but to say ChemE is easy is just asinine. He spent is college time learning about abstract mathematics, circuit analysis and electrical design, so where in his mind does he think he would know anything about chemical engineering? He must've spent his spare time learning about heat transfer, fluid mechanics, material science and thermodynamics. None of those courses are taught in electrical engineering so when he says he can be a ChemE would be like a foot doctor saying he could be a spinal surgeon. Overall, there are very few engineering disciplines that have enough knowledge where they could truly say that they could do multiple fields of engineering; chemical engineering and electrical engineering are very far apart in nature.
The one thing I can agree with about your colleagues opinions is their respect for physics majors. All fields of engineering are greatly weighted in physics (with the exception of industrial engineering where its more number crunching), therefore we tend to have a very high respect for what they have knowledge of. Physics is an extremely broad, demanding and always progressing field.
I just hope your buddies are work grow up someday. Just smile when they say similar things in the future because you know how dumb they sound. I hope this helps!
